# Highlights, ombre or balayage? Choosing colour that suits Indian hair

> Three ways to lighten and add dimension, and three very different grow-out stories. Pick by how often you want to visit, not just how it looks on day one.

Most colour regrets are not about the shade. They are about the grow-out: the hard line at the root, the stripes that look brassy six weeks later, the salon visit you now need every month. Choosing between highlights, ombre and balayage is really choosing how you want your colour to age.

## Highlights: brightness and definition

Highlights lighten selected sections against your base colour, so light catches your hair as it moves instead of it reading as one flat tone. Placement is everything: face-framing pieces, all-over brightness or something subtle, all planned around how you wear your hair.

Done well, they look like sun-kissed depth rather than stripes. Plan a gloss refresh every six to eight weeks to keep the tone clean.

## Ombre: dark roots, light ends

Ombre keeps your natural colour at the root and lightens gradually toward the ends, so the transition reads as one deliberate fade. It is a bolder, more graphic look than balayage, and because your roots stay close to natural, regrowth is barely noticeable.

That makes it one of the lowest-maintenance colour options at the root. The lightened ends need more moisture than your natural hair, so deep conditioning matters. Expect around two and a half to four hours, and a gloss every eight to ten weeks.

## Balayage: hand-painted and soft

Balayage is painted by hand section by section, so the colour melts into your natural shade and grows out softly, with no hard root line. It is our usual answer for people who want natural, low-upkeep colour and do not want to be back every few weeks. A strand test and an honest consultation about what your hair can take come first.

## A note on dark Indian hair

Dark hair has to be lightened in stages, and it tends to pull warm along the way. That is not a fault. It is the reason toning and glossing are part of the service and why we check your hair's history before deciding how far to go in one visit.

## Which one for you?

- Want brightness and dimension with visible definition: highlights
- Want a dramatic fade and the least root maintenance: ombre
- Want a soft, natural, low-upkeep look: balayage
- Have very dark or previously coloured hair: book a consultation and strand test first

## Keeping it fresh

Whichever you choose, the same habits help. Go sulphate-free, wash a little less and a little cooler, use a purple or toning shampoo weekly if you are blonde-leaning, and book a gloss between visits.

## Ready to change your colour?

Bring a few photos and your hair history and we will map out what is possible, and in how many visits.
