Braids
Protective styling, done with patience.Braids at HSR Layout
Braiding is a craft measured in hours, and the difference between braids that protect your hair and braids that damage it comes down almost entirely to tension and sectioning.
We offer normal braids, corn row braids and box braids. Every one starts with clean, conditioned, detangled hair and neat sectioning, and none of them are braided so tightly that your scalp is sore that evening. Tight braiding is the leading cause of traction alopecia along the hairline — a braider who knows that braids differently.

Concerns this solves
Braids should protect your hair for weeks. Done badly, they take your hairline with them — which is the single thing we're most careful about.
Braids so tight your scalp aches for days
Thinning or receding along the hairline from tension
Uneven sectioning that looks messy within a week
Braiders who rush a style that genuinely takes hours
The difference you'll feel.
Tension you can actually live with
We braid firmly enough to last but never to the point of pain. If your scalp hurts, the braids are too tight — and we'd rather redo a section than send you home sore.
Neat, even sectioning throughout
Clean parting and consistent sections are what separate braids that look sharp for weeks from ones that look untidy in days.
We prep the hair first
Hair is washed, conditioned and fully detangled before a single braid is started, so what is underneath stays healthy.
Your experience, step by step.

Make your results last.
Sleep in a satin scarf
Satin stops the frizz and friction that ages braids fastest.
Moisturise your scalp
A light oil or spray on the scalp two or three times a week keeps it comfortable.
Take them out on time
Six to eight weeks maximum — leaving braids longer risks matting and breakage.
In their words.
"First time my scalp has not been sore after braiding. They still look sharp four weeks in."

Your braids questions,
answered honestly.
How long does a braiding appointment take?
It depends entirely on the style and length. Normal braids can be done in around two hours; corn rows take longer; a full head of box braids can run to five or six hours. We book realistically so nobody is rushed — bring headphones and something to watch.
How long do braids last?
Six to eight weeks is the sweet spot. Beyond that, new growth at the root and shed hair trapped in the braid start to matt, which causes breakage when you take them out. We'd rather you rebook than push them to three months.
Will braids damage my hair?
Not when braided at the right tension — done properly they're genuinely protective, shielding your hair from daily manipulation and heat. Damage comes from braiding too tightly and leaving them in too long, which is exactly what we avoid.
Do you provide the extension hair?
You're welcome to bring your own, or we can advise on what to buy for the style, length and thickness you want. Tell us at booking so we can plan the appointment time properly.
How do I wash my hair with braids in?
Focus on the scalp rather than the lengths — diluted shampoo applied directly to the scalp with your fingertips, rinsed thoroughly, then dried properly so no moisture sits trapped at the roots. Every two to three weeks is plenty.
Can you braid fine or thin hair?
Often yes, but the style matters. Fine hair needs smaller, lighter braids without heavy extension hair, since weight is what causes tension damage. We'll look at your hair and tell you honestly which styles will work and which will not.
