Deep Tissue Massage
Into the knot, not around it.Deep Tissue Massage at HSR Layout
If you sit at a desk all day, there is a specific knot between your shoulder blade and spine that has probably been there for months. A relaxing massage glides over it. Deep tissue goes into it.
This is slower and firmer than Swedish — your therapist works through the muscle layers and into the pressure points where tension has locked in, holding on the spots that need it. It is not always comfortable in the moment, and it is not supposed to be painful either. The line between the two is communication, and we check in constantly.

Concerns this solves
Deep tissue is the right choice when a relaxing massage has stopped touching the problem — but only when the pressure is judged properly.
Knots between the shoulder blades that never fully go
Chronic lower back and neck tightness from desk work
Massages that feel nice but change nothing
Being worked on so hard you are sore for days
The difference you'll feel.
Therapists trained in deeper technique
Deep tissue is a specific skill, not simply pressing harder. Our therapists are trained to work through muscle layers safely.
Constant pressure check-ins
We ask, and we mean it. Deep tissue should feel intense but never sharp — if it's sharp, we back off immediately.
We work the cause, not just the spot
A tight shoulder often traces back to the hip or posture. We treat the surrounding chain rather than only the place that hurts.
Your experience, step by step.
Tension Consultation
We map where your pain and tightness actually are.
Warm the Tissue
Broader, warming strokes prepare the muscle for deeper work.
Deep Work
Sustained pressure into knots and trigger points, checking as we go.
Flush & Finish
Lighter flushing strokes settle the muscle and close the session.

Make your results last.
Drink plenty of water
Hydration helps flush what deep work releases from the muscle.
Expect a day of tenderness
Mild soreness for 24 hours is normal — sharp pain is not.
Move gently
Light stretching and walking keeps the muscle from tightening back up.

Your deep tissue massage questions,
answered honestly.
How is deep tissue different from Swedish massage?
Swedish uses long, flowing strokes for relaxation and circulation. Deep tissue works slowly and firmly into specific muscle layers and trigger points to release chronic knots. Choose Swedish to unwind, deep tissue to fix something specific.
Should I book 60 or 90 minutes?
Sixty minutes covers one or two problem areas properly — usually back, neck and shoulders. Ninety gives time to work the full body or go deeper on stubborn areas. If you've had tension for months, ninety is the better use of your money.
Will it hurt?
There's a distinctive 'good pain' when a knot releases — intense but satisfying. Sharp or radiating pain is different and means the pressure is wrong. Tell us immediately and we'll adjust. You should never grit your teeth through a massage.
Why am I sore afterwards?
Mild soreness for a day, similar to after exercise, is normal — deep work creates micro-changes in the muscle that your body then repairs. Drink water and it settles quickly. Soreness lasting beyond two days means the pressure was too much, so tell us next time.
Is it safe if I have an injury?
Tell us before we start. We avoid working directly on acute injuries, inflammation, or recent surgery sites, and we'll adapt around them. For a diagnosed condition like a disc issue, check with your doctor first and we'll work conservatively.
Can I get deep tissue while pregnant?
We'd recommend Swedish instead — it's specifically suited to pregnancy and far more appropriate. Tell us you're pregnant when booking and we'll guide you to the right treatment and positioning.
